EDITORIAL
Merhaba . . . .
Welcome to this the first edition of 2003. A very happy new year to all our readers
wherever you may be reading this; here in Kemer or somewhere else reading
it on the Kemer Marina web site. With Christmas and New Year over and done with everyone is concentrating on
those forgotten jobs to get our boats ready for the new season. The mixed weather means we still have time for
some rest and relaxation but work is becoming more and more the priority. The rain has taken its toll on our
Sunday outings but hopefully things will improve and let us do a bit more walking in the beautiful countryside
around Kemer. We also have a few more parties to enjoy with Valentines Day coming up soon. So, till next month
keep enjoying the parties but get those jobs done.

Kemer Marina ‘HIDE & SEEK’
competition
The competition on New Years Day
was such a success that we have decided to repeat the fun. The last time we played, the first person to turn
up was Oktay who |
|
|
was therefore delegated to ‘hide’. Well we all know how well
Oktay can hide so no-one found him for three weeks. Next game will be on 1st April.

Quiz Nights
Our regular attendees will know that
the quiz nights have been a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all those taking part. A few more teams
would certainly not go amiss and might increase the competition. So far Ted, Ron, Chris, Anne & Gary and Roger
have set the quizzes and they have proved to be totally varied in difficulty and style. Up until the time we all
start to depart, the quizzes will continue either on a Thursday or Saturday evenings depending on other
activities. Listen to the net for details.

Cinema Trips
Recent outings have included Lord of
the Rings (The Two Towers), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Horrors and the latest Bond film, Die Another Day.
All very good and well worth the visit.

Christmas
Eve
The Kemer Khorale entertained us on the
pontoons and also back in the Navigator to a selection of Christmas Carols to set us all in party mood for the
Seasons celebrations. Hot wine, cocktails and smoked salmon were served and everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable
evening.
Christmas
Day
A superb day for everyone, especially, of course, the
children. Christmas Lunch was as usual excellent and special thanks go yet again to the Chef and his staff for
providing us with such a gourmet meal. Jean from SY Moonbie was responsible for |
|
|
coordinating
the activities on the day and thanks go to her and all the other ladies for all their hard work. Everyone had
obviously been good during the year and Santa called in to see us during the afternoon with gifts for everyone.
New Years Eve
Close on the heels of the Christmas
celebrations but everyone was still in party mood to see in the New Year. Ibrahim and staff managed at last to
hunt down the Wild Boar so that we could all have ‘something different’ for the party. Thanks to him and the
staff for looking after us and in fact for joining in the fun a little later in the evening. Thanks to Anne (Cat
Toucan Tango) and the rest of the ladies for the organisation.
As can be seen from the photographs everyone
(especially Walter) enjoyed the Belly Dancing display.
Thanks also to go to
Paul (SY Sea Otter) for organising the music and to the host of others who were involved in making
everything so enjoyable.

Burns Night
An evening of Scottish culture on the 25th January when
we celebrated the birthday of Scotland’s most loved poet Robert Burns. For most this was the first time they
had attended a Burns Night Supper but I think everyone enjoyed the occasion greatly as something very different
to the norm.
Special
thanks go to Bob (SY Meg) for his memorable Address to the Haggis, to Chris and Mary (SY Aventura) for
everything they did, and all the others for speeches, readings, toasts etc. Yet again a very special thanks
to Ibrahim, the Chef and everyone involved for producing a ‘Turkish Haggis’ which tasted truly wonderful. A
little Scottish dancing followed, which in turn was followed by the ‘Hasan Harem’ doing their very own
‘Mambo Number 5’ in the bar at about midnight (or later). One or two sore heads on Sunday morning followed
the whiskey but everyone seemed to have survived.

Sea Fare
Easy Orange Marmalade
6 oranges (about 1 kg)
2 lemons
sugar
water
Wash and chop fruit, cutting into
small pieces according to desirable peel size, using all the fruit, and measure into a large crock using a
mug. Add the same number of cups of water, less one, cover and leave overnight.
Next day, measure again, adding the
same amount of sugar as fruit and water and put into large pan.
Boil until it turns dark and
thickens, stirring regularly and making sure it doesn't boil over. This means a low heat on gas or electric
ring and is around 2.5 hours.
Test for set by dropping a small
amount onto a saucer and putting in fridge for a few minutes. Push with fingernail and if it wrinkles, it's
set: if not, keep boiling.
Prepare jars: use plastic tops if
possible: wash thoroughly. Pre-heat jars in hot oven or by pouring hot water over a metal spoon to prevent
cracking.
Fill, put tops on loosely,
tightening up after 15 mins.
Makes 9 jars.
Alternatives: pressure cooking
before adding the sugar shortens the cooking time.
Omit 1 mug of sugar for less sweet
flavour.

Sunday
Outings
Çamyuva to Phasaelis
22nd
December 2002
A very pleasant walk organised by Bob
& Jean. We took the bus to a small village near Çamyuva whose name I can’t remember then walked through the
trees to the beach and along the clifftops to our picnic site. As the photograph above shows we were all having
a great time. After lunch on to Phasaelis where a very determined official refused to let us see the ruins for
free. So we continued on our way to Tekirova to wait for the bus back to the marina.
White House
5th January
2003
Again another one organised by Bob &
Jean (See note later). A very pleasant walk up to the top of the bluff behind the marina proved to be just a
little more difficult than some had thought it would be. However we all made it to the top for our picnic lunch
(even Trish who had gone |
|
|
off in another direction scouting
another walk). A somewhat more leisurely walk back down the track returned us to the marina and the hot
showers.
Ron & Julie’s Failed Walks
Unfortunately, there have been a
slight shortage of outings this month due to the fact that every single one planned by Ron & Julie has been
rained off!!!! This is either really unlucky or someone has a direct link to the man upstairs. These walks have
included two to the Goynuk Valley, the Camel Trail and the Hobit Valley. In view of the fact that Ron & Julie
are going to be out of Turkey for most of February I am certain that you can rest assured that the weather will
be brilliant.

Yachties Go Skiing
A large party
of Livaboards with children left Kemer Marina on Jan. 5th for a twelve hour bus ride to Uludag Ski
resort near Bursa in the north of Turkey. The weeks skiing was organised by Paul (Sea Otter) and included one
beginner who had never been in snow, several who had never skied before and a lot of more experienced skiers.
Havas Travel Agency provided all the arrangements and gave the group an excellent deal in Hotel Voyage with all
meals and drink provided.
The first morning was taken up
hiring boots and skies |
|
|
and laughing at
the beginners' attempts to stand up in their new
environment. Dirk & Nechie (Sabadia) began lessons and by day three all the beginners were going up the mountain
on the T-bars and skiing down. The children made the most impressive advance and were soon giving their parents
headaches with their daring-do.
Evenings were
taken up eating, testing the bar service to destruction and a popular card school led by Gail (Gone Troppo). The
children made friends with the Russian children staying at the hotel and enjoyed the facilities in the
children’s room and the games room.
|
|
|
By the end of the week the more advanced skiers had
discovered most
of the ski runs on the mountain and Geoff & Jen (Sooty Albatross) took the beginners up a chair lift for a long
flat ski along a ridge that provided spectacular views across the mountains to the Sea of Marmara and the
entrance to the Black Sea.
Thanks Paul for
organising the trip and thanks to the rest of the group for their encouragement and their great company.
Chris (s/y Aventura)
